Friends and Families of Psychiatric Survivors of Wisconsin

More About Friends & Families of Psychiatric Survivors

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill says it is an organization for those who have a friend or relative who has been labeled with a psychiatric diagnosis. Yet, NAMI is a major force behind the spread of forced "treatment" laws. Friends & Families of Psychiatric Survivors is opposed to all violence, force or restraint of any kind, including chemical restraint.

Another nasty little secret is that NAMI believes that people accused of "mental illness" can never get better, no matter what. NAMI does use the word, "recovery" but they use it to mean becoming "medication compliant".

We started FFPS back in 2000. A beloved, disabled and very vulnerable family member was subjected to some terrifying reprisal because of the startup of FFPS. This person was completely innocent, and had nothing to do with FFPS whatsoever.

The folks who arranged the reprisal were on NAMI/AMI's board of directors at the time. But, they also held full-time positions in the publicly-funded mental "health" system.

That is a serious conflict of interest.

One of the more intriguing aspects of the "schizophrenia" literature is the discrepancy between the strength of the belief that "schizophrenia is a brain disease" and the availability of direct supporting evidence; even those who hold the belief admit that there is no direct evidence for it

Or, as Adbusters Magazine puts it;

The Biomedical Model of Mental Illness ---- A Theory in Search of Evidence

The myth of the biomedical model of mental illness.

(Actually, the term "mental illness" itself is just a euphemism for extreme distress.)

The fairy tale goes like this:
  • That which becomes diagnosed as "mental illness" is a medical problem.
  • Since it is a medical problem, it can be "treated" (but never actually cured) with drugs.
  • The drugs are safe and enhance the well-being of those who take them.
  • The need for the drugs is verified by lab tests showing that the person does indeed have a "chemical imbalance in the brain".
  • There are humane, compassionate treatments that go along with the drugs.
  • These treatments and drugs are used together in a way that the patients are very fond of.
